Adekunle Gold Checked Simi’s Genotype Before Dating Her, E Get Why

Forget “What’s your love language?” In Nigeria, the real question can be: “Please send me your genotype result.”

Adekunle Gold has revealed that when he and Simi met, one of the first things he wanted to establish was whether their genotypes were compatible. He said Simi is AA and that, because he lives with sickle cell disease, he would not have proceeded with the relationship if their genotypes could put their future children at serious risk.

Honestly, Nigerian romance is different.

In America, somebody meets you and asks, “What do you do for fun?”

In Nigeria, your own person may be asking, “What is your genotype?”

You have not even finished saying “My name is,” and somebody has already opened a WhatsApp conversation with, “Do you know your genotype?”

At this point, Nigerian dating is beginning to resemble a job recruitment process. CV? Check. Character? Check. Family background? Check. Financial stability? Pending. Genotype? Very important document, please attach PDF.

And to be fair, Gold’s reason is deeply personal. He has spoken publicly about living with sickle cell disease and the experiences he had growing up, so his concern about having children who could face the same condition is understandable. He has also used his platform to raise awareness about sickle cell.

But imagine if everybody adopted the same approach.

“Baby, I love you.”

“Awwww.”

“But before we continue, have you done your genotype test?”

“Excuse me?”

“I just want us to build a healthy future.”

Suddenly, romance has become Genotype and Chill.

And Nigerians will understand why this matters. We have all heard the family story where two people were deeply in love, got married, had children, and only later discovered their genotype compatibility was a serious problem.

So perhaps Gold is not really killing romance.

He is simply reminding everybody that sometimes love needs sense to supervise it.

Because butterflies in your stomach are beautiful.

But butterflies cannot raise a child.

And before you start telling somebody, “You are the love of my life,” maybe know what is written on that tiny laboratory paper first.

In Nigeria, true love may begin with chemistry, but sometimes you need the laboratory to confirm it.
