Agbara Nla Is Coming Back After 33 Years, and an Entire Generation of Nigerian Children Just Felt a Chill

Now, 33 years later, Mike Bamiloye is bringing it back. "Agbara Nla: The Return" hits cinemas nationwide on October 1, Independence Day, which feels less like a scheduling coincidence and more like Nigeria collectively deciding to celebrate liberation twice in one day. And in the most beautiful, slightly unhinged continuity move in Nollywood history, Bamiloye himself is reprising his original role as Isawuru. Same man. Same character. Same unfinished spiritual battle. Thirty-three years is a long time to still be dealing with the same demon, but respect to him for the commitment.

His own announcement had the exact energy of an uncle testing whether you still remember your roots: "Who remember the experiences then? That was 33 years ago." Sir, some of us remember it a little too well. Some of us are still working through it in therapy, quietly, without telling anyone why we're afraid of masquerades.

According to his sons, who directed the remake, it took about four years just to convince their father to revisit the story, which honestly checks out, because reopening a 33-year-old spiritual battle is not a decision you rush into, even for your own children.

The film's going international too, US, UK, Canada, which means diaspora Nigerians who thought they'd escaped this particular fear by relocating abroad are about to discover that Agbara Nla found their address anyway.
