Datti Says None of Tinubu’s Opponents Can Fix Nigeria, So Apparently 2027 Is Now a Group Project With No Qualified Student

Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed has delivered what may be the most Nigerian assessment of the 2027 presidential race yet: President Bola Tinubu should leave office, but Nigerians should apparently not expect much from the people trying to replace him.

Speaking on the Mic On Podcast, Datti said Tinubu should prepare to hand over power but argued that none of the major politicians challenging him, including his former running mate Peter Obi and former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, has the capacity to improve Nigeria. His reasoning is that these politicians have all, at some point, been part of the political establishment responsible for Nigeria’s current situation.

And honestly, this is where Nigerian politics becomes a proper family meeting.

Imagine telling your uncle, “Please leave this house. You have stayed here long enough. But don't give the house to any of the people waiting outside because they will probably make it worse.”

Sir, who should he give the keys to? Perhaps Datti himself.

Because when the interviewer reminded him that he had also been in politics and served in the National Assembly, Datti basically brought out his political CV and said, “But I have never belonged to a ruling party.” He argued that he was in the CPC when it was an opposition party and resigned around the time it merged into the APC.

This is the beautiful thing about Nigerian politics: everybody has a political history, but somehow everybody's own history comes with a footnote explaining why their own one doesn't count.

Peter Obi has now responded, saying his record as Anambra governor demonstrates that he has the capacity to improve Nigeria. Meanwhile, Datti has also revealed that he previously warned Obi against joining the ADC, saying he had advised him at the Yar’Adua Centre that the move was not suitable for his ambitions.

So essentially, the 2027 opposition conversation has entered that stage where former allies are no longer just disagreeing about Nigeria's future.

They are now reviewing each other's past.

At this rate, Nigerians may soon need a presidential debate, a therapist and a family mediator.

Because Tinubu is being told to leave. Obi is being told he cannot fix Nigeria. Atiku is being questioned about his political history. Datti says he is different.

And the Nigerian voter is standing there thinking:

“Wonderful. But who exactly are we voting for?”
