Davido Has Discovered That Even Poverty Motivation Can Have a Rich Person Feeling Attacked

Nigerian music has entered another episode of the ongoing national argument over who suffered more before becoming successful, and this time Davido and Erigga are the unwilling contestants. It started when Erigga posted a seemingly general shout-out to musicians who did not come from wealthy families and had to grind for every dollar they earned. He did not mention anybody by name, but somehow, Davido found himself standing directly inside the tweet.

Davido, whose father is billionaire businessman Adedeji Adeleke, responded by reminding Erigga that musicians who came from money can also work hard and deserve recognition. He then described the message as “useless motivation” and called Erigga an “imbecile.” The argument subsequently moved from the traditional Nigerian debate of “who worked harder?” to the more familiar territory of Twitter beef, where two successful adults can spend valuable time proving to millions of strangers that the other person is the problem.

The funny thing is that Erigga's original post did not actually mention Davido. It was simply a celebration of artistes who made it without the financial safety net that comes with being born into wealth. But perhaps this is the problem with social media: sometimes you can throw a general compliment into the air and somebody who was not invited to the meeting will arrive with a PowerPoint presentation.

And to be fair to Davido, coming from money does not mean you cannot work hard. Having access to resources can open doors, but it cannot automatically give you longevity, talent, hit songs or a global career. Davido has spent more than a decade building an enormous music career, and reducing that achievement entirely to his family background would also be intellectually lazy.

But Erigga's point is valid too. There is a very real difference between starting life with a safety net and starting with absolutely nothing. One person can fail and go home to a wealthy family. Another person can fail and discover that failure has come with a landlord, a generator bill, and no Plan B.

That distinction does not make one person's hustle fake. It simply means the distance between the starting lines was different.

And perhaps that is what makes this whole argument so funny.

Erigga wanted to celebrate people who came from nothing.

Davido heard, “People who came from nothing are better.”

Nigeria has now spent two days debating a competition that nobody officially organised.

At this rate, we may soon need the National Bureau of Statistics to calculate who suffered more before becoming famous.

Because apparently, even success now needs a poverty certificate.
