Fola Leads Headies With 10 Nominations, One Song "You" Basically Nominated Itself Three Times

So the Headies dropped their list, and Fola is sitting at the top with 10 nominations, and somehow one single song called "You" is up for Best Recording, Afrobeats Single of the Year, AND Viewers' Choice. At this point "You" isn't a song anymore, it's a whole department.

Nobody saw this coming the way it's coming. This is a man who's been quietly putting in work since 2014, long before "Ginger Me" made Nigeria stop and go "wait, who is this?", and now he's leading a Headies list ahead of Omah Lay, Wizkid, and Mavo like it's the most normal thing in the world.

And of course, because this is Nigeria, the reactions have already split into camps. One camp is saying "finally, the man's grind is paying off, let him eat." The other camp is somewhere doing chart archaeology, cross-referencing streaming numbers from 2025 like they're building a case file, trying to explain why HE has 10 nods and their own favourite only has 4.

Meanwhile, somewhere in a group chat, someone is bringing up "Catharsis" and saying "see, I told una this album was different" as if they weren't also confused about the title when it dropped. Everybody's a music historian in hindsight.

The real gist, though, is that this man got his first Nigerian Number 1 as recently as January, shared with Shoday, and by August he's leading the entire Headies list. That's not a slow rise, that's a man who found the elevator while everyone else was still climbing the stairs.

By October 25, when the actual ceremony happens in Toronto, half of Nigerian Twitter will still be arguing about whether 10 nominations equals 10 wins, forgetting that in award-show mathematics, nominations are just the invitation, the real fight starts when the envelopes open.

Either way, "You" already won something this year: the record for one song doing the most work in a single household.
