Lagos State Introduces Ferry Routes for Motorists Trapped in Traffic
Lagos State has introduced emergency ferry services for motorists who have spent so long in traffic that they now answer to waterfront residents. Officials said the move was necessary after rain turned the city’s roads into “multimodal” water routes, with cars, canoes and danfos all competing for space.

As relentless rainfall merged seamlessly with the city's legendary traffic this week, the Lagos State Government has reportedly unveiled emergency ferry services for motorists who have accepted that their vehicles are now "waterfront properties."
Officials say the initiative became necessary after commuters spent so long on major roads that several had already updated their residential addresses to Third Mainland Bridge, Opposite the Yellow Danfo.
"We must adapt to changing realities," a government spokesperson said while standing knee-deep in floodwater beside a traffic officer directing both cars and canoes. "Lagos is committed to providing a multimodal transport system. If your car can't move, perhaps your boat can."
Residents described scenes of remarkable resilience across the city.
One office worker reportedly attended three Zoom meetings, renewed his driver's licence, celebrated his birthday, and watched an entire Nollywood series without moving more than 200 metres along Ozumba Mbadiwe.
Meanwhile, food vendors have embraced the opportunity by launching Traffic Delivery Services, promising hot jollof rice, roasted corn, phone charging, and emotional support directly to stranded drivers. One entrepreneur has reportedly opened a barbershop between two stationary SUVs, advertising "Fresh Fade While You Wait."
Children in flooded neighbourhoods were also seen politely asking motorists for permission before using their side mirrors as diving platforms.
Marine experts have since expressed concern after spotting yellow danfo buses displaying life jackets and advertising themselves as "Lagos Water-Resistant Transit." Several ride-hailing drivers have reportedly updated their profiles to include "Boat Experience Preferred."
At press time, Lagosians stuck in traffic on the Lekki-Epe Expressway had reportedly elected a chairman, formed a community development association, and were debating whether to contribute money for streetlights since, according to them, "we practically live here now."
