Portugal Has Basically Just Renamed a Beach "Afrobeats Season" Again, and Davido's 2027 Is Already Fully Booked

Every single year, Portugal hands over a beach called Praia da Rocha to us, and every single year, we act surprised about it like it's not becoming a national tradition at this point. Afro Nation Portugal just announced its first wave of 2027 headliners, Davido, Rema, and Fally Ipupa, for the festival's return to Portimão next June, and Nigeria has, once again, quietly annexed a European coastline for a long weekend.

The organisers called the trio "three giants of African music," which honestly tracks, though at this point Afro Nation could just rename the whole event "Nigeria (And Friends) Goes to the Beach" and nobody would argue. Rema is coming back after his 2024 headline debut there, riding the momentum of a Grammy-nominated album. Fally Ipupa, the Congolese rumba legend, is marking 20 years in music by returning for another appearance. And GIMS is on the bill too, technically as a "special guest," which is a wild demotion for a man who is genuinely one of the biggest French-language artists alive, but that's just what happens when you share a poster with this particular trio.

Then there's Davido. This man is already booked for a three-night residency at the National Theatre in December, and now he's also headlining an international festival in June 2027, meaning his calendar is filling up faster than some of his own controversies from this year have finished trending. Somehow the music keeps landing bigger bookings regardless of what else is happening around it.

Amapiano gets its own dedicated stage this year too, "Piano People," led by Kabza De Small, because apparently one stage was no longer enough room for how much African music this festival now has to fit in.

Portugal really just lets us do this every year. Respectfully, we should say thank you more.
