Senate passes bill renaming pothole on 3rd Mainland Bridge after itself
Lawmakers describe the legislation as a 'symbol of bipartisan cooperation' that finally gives Lagosians a depression they can call their own.
ABUJA — In a rare display of cross-party unity, the Nigerian Senate on Tuesday passed the long-awaited Pothole (Naming and Commemoration) Bill 2026, formally christening a 1.4-metre crater on the 3rd Mainland Bridge as 'The Senate Pothole'.
Senators described the moment as 'historic' — the first time both chambers had agreed on the existence of any infrastructure problem in over twelve years.
A monument to bipartisanship
Senate President Akin Iyabosé called the bill 'a triumph of legislative pragmatism', noting that while filling the pothole would cost an estimated ₦42 million, naming it cost only ₦600 million in committee sittings.
Plans for an unveiling ceremony are already underway. Citizens are encouraged to drive carefully — straight into history.
