Toyin Abraham has once again had to defend her right to kneel, a sentence that sounds like it belongs in a medieval knighthood ceremony but is, in fact, standard Nigerian celebrity discourse. The actress was filmed kneeling to greet billionaire socialite Shade Okoya and her husband, and within hours, the internet convened its most sacred institution: the unsolicited posture review board, a body with no members, no qualifications, and unlimited jurisdiction over how low a grown woman is allowed to bend her own knees.

Critics have argued the gesture was excessive, noting that some of the people she knelt for are not dramatically older than her, a complaint that assumes respect operates strictly on a birth-certificate point system, verified and audited before any greeting may proceed. Others called it "eye service," a term Nigerians deploy whenever kindness appears in the presence of wealth, as though poor people never receive a warm greeting and rich people never deserve one.

Toyin, for her part, has responded the way she always does: unapologetically, repeatedly, and with the confidence of a woman who has clearly done this dance before, both literally and rhetorically. She has cited her upbringing, her culture, her right to greet whoever she deems worthy, in whatever position she chooses, a defence so consistent it now qualifies as brand identity. At this point, Toyin kneeling has achieved the same narrative reliability as NEPA taking light, everyone has an opinion, nobody can actually stop it, and it will happen again regardless of the discourse.

The real Nigerian phenomenon here is not the kneeling itself but the national instinct to legislate other people's respect levels via comment section.
