Enugu Is Shutting Down the Entire State for 10 Hours So 260 Councillors Can Get Elected
Enugu residents will enjoy 10 hours of compulsory civic stillness on Saturday, as the state pauses weddings, suya runs and general movement so 260 councillors can emerge peacefully under democracy’s favourite setting: lockdown.

Enugu State just announced that come Saturday, nobody is going anywhere. The government has ordered a full restriction of vehicular movement across the entire state from 6 am to 4 pm, all so residents can peacefully elect chairmen and councillors across 17 local government areas and 260 wards. Ten hours. Statewide. For council elections. If this is the response to local government, I genuinely fear what would happen if Enugu ever hosted a presidential runoff.
To be fair, there are exemptions, election officials, accredited observers, journalists, health workers, ambulances, firefighters. So if your house is on fire or you're in labour, you're fine. If you just wanted to get suya, you're staying exactly where you are until 4 pm.
The Police Commissioner added his own specific instruction that deserves more attention than it's getting: armed security aides on VIP escort duty have been told not to accompany their principals to polling units. Read that twice. The default assumption, apparently, is common enough that it needed its own explicit rule: politicians showing up to vote surrounded by armed bodyguards. Somewhere in Enugu, a Commissioner sat down and thought, "yes, we do need to say this part out loud."
Meanwhile, Governor Mbah is out here publicly telling voters to "vote APC all the way, top to bottom, no vote sharing," while his own government is the one enforcing the neutral, peaceful, hitch-free movement lockdown for the same election. Refereeing your own match while also wearing one team's jersey is a bold combination, but here we are.
And if this whole announcement sounds suspiciously familiar, that's because it basically is. Enugu ran the identical playbook for its last local government election too, right down to the "peaceful, orderly, secure and hitch-free" phrasing. At this point, somebody in government has a saved template, and they just update the date field before hitting send.
