Kano Just Hired 2,037 Health Workers, and We Already Know What Happens Next
Kano has hired 2,037 health workers in one day, a bold attempt to replace everyone already comparing NHS salaries on WhatsApp. Officials say the next phase is ensuring hospitals have light, equipment, and staff who have not quietly entered the Canada Express Lane.

This is actual good news gist for once, Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano personally handed out appointment letters to 2,037 new health workers, doctors, nurses, pharmacists, midwives, community health extension workers, the whole squad. 250 doctors, 250 nurses, 250 midwives, even 50 epidemiologists, because apparently Kano decided "let's just hire everybody at once" instead of doing this in annoying little batches like most states do.
And genuinely, respect is due, because the reason behind this recruitment is the same reason behind basically every manpower shortage in Nigeria's health sector: "mass exodus." Translation: our doctors keep relocating to London, Canada, wherever there is steady light and a salary that actually reflects the word "doctor." You train somebody for years, government spends money, and then one WhatsApp message from a UK hospital later, oga don already book flight.
So Kano's solution? Hire 2,037 more and hope some of them stay long enough to actually treat patients before the next relocation wave hits. It's giving "fill the bucket faster than the hole can drain it" energy, but honestly, in this economy, that's basically strategy.
WHO and UNICEF representatives were even there clapping for the governor, which, fair enough, because compared to states where health workers haven't been paid a salary in months, "we hired 2,037 people in one day" is genuinely a flex.
But let's be real with ourselves for a second: hiring is the easy part, the fun part, the photo-op part. The real test starts after today. Will these 2,037 people actually get paid on time? Will the hospitals have equipment, light, and basic supplies to match the new manpower? Or will we be back here in two years doing "Kano recruits another 2,000 after the first set relocated to Canada"?
For now though, congratulations to everybody who got that letter today. Collect your appointment, hold onto your passport renewal reminder, and may your shift schedule actually come with functioning electricity. Progress is progress, we'll take it.
